Chickweed is a Common Annual Weed that thrives in both Cultivated and Bare Ground but  is very Adaptable to a Large Range of Growing Conditions,  including   Gardens, Farmyards, Roadside Verges and Coastal Cliffs. It is thought to Particularly like Disturbed Ground and is very often Considered a useless and Intrusive Weed.   It is thought to Prefer a Rich Soil, and so can be a Good Indicator of the Fertility and Health of the Soil.



This Plant Produces Large Quantities of Rapidly Germinating Seeds all through the Year and can  Quite easily Smother Beds  and Borders if it is not  Controlled.



Chickweed has Bright Green Pointed Oval Leaves that Grow in Opposite Pairs which Fold Towards each other in the Evening to help to  Protect the Fragile New Growth,   Its  Branching Stems often lie along the Ground.  Chickweed has Tiny, White, 5  Deeply Divided Star Shaped Petals which are borne either Singly in the  Leaf Axils and also in Clusters at  the Stem Tips and will Flower  at any time of the Year, but is most Noticeable in the Spring and in the  Autumn and only last for  last a day or two.



As its Common Name Suggests, Chickweed was used as Feed for Chickens and Caged Birds and is still widely used  today.
